Footprint Travel Declares a Climate Emergency

by Footprint Team (28 June, 2021) - General information

At Footprint, we believe travel is about making the world a better place. With a journey of 20 years of responsible travel, we have strived to provide good value to the local community, improve and reduce environmental impact, raise public awareness and  protect species through tourism. As most of our holidays are walking or cycling-based, we strive to maintain our operations as environmentally friendly as possible.

However, we recognize that tourism is a carbon-intensive activity, implying that the earth is facing global warming (1.44F in 2021), travel-related carbon emissions, ice melting, and extreme weather… We asked if there was anything that could be done, aside from environmental conservation actions, to limit the amount of carbon emitted every trip when flying.

From 2021, Footprint Travel joined a collective of over 279 travel organizations and companies who are coming together to find sustainable solutions to the climate crisis through the Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency initiative.

As a founding signatory of Tourism Declares, we commit:

1. We develop a ‘Climate Action Plan’ within 12 months of our  initial declaration, or sooner if possible.

2. We share our commitment & progress of  ‘Climate Action Plan’ publicly and update on progress each year.

3. Reduce carbon emissions: Accept current IPCC advice stating the need to cut global carbon emissions to 55% below 2017 levels by 2030 to keep the planet within 1.5 degrees of warming. Ensure our ‘Climate Action Plan’ represents actions designed to achieve this as a minimum, through delivering transparent, measurable and increasing reductions in the total carbon emissions per trip arising from our operations and the travel services sold by us.

4. Work together: We encourage suppliers and partners to make the same declaration; share best practice amongst peers;  and actively participate in the Tourism Declares community.

5. Advocate for change: We recognise the need for system change across the industry to accelerate a just transition towards carbon-free tourism.; We promise to continue our efforts on the climate problem in 2021 and the decade ahead, advocating governments for change, educating travelers and customers on how they can decrease their impacts, and engaging with our tour operator partners to discuss how they may reduce the emissions of their vacations.

We also call upon partners, individuals, and organizations in the supply chain to join Tourism Declare now, let’s protect and improve our beloved earth together!
