Christmas in Hanoi

Vietnamese might not traditionally celebrate Christmas, but driving or wandering the streets of Hanoi will leave one thinking that Santa Claus will soon be coming to town. There are many Christmas things for locals, expats, and visitors to take part in including midnight mass, Christmas dinners, and Christmas decorating.

There will be Christmas services at the Saint Joseph (Notre Dame) Cathedral. Nha Tho street becomes one of the busiest in Hanoi around Christmas with the church welcoming thousands of visitors.

For Christmas dinner with all the fixings, many of the four and five star hotels, as well as many of Hanoi’s restaurants are offering buffets, set-menus, and Christmas activities for the whole family. A search on the internet will turn up many possibilities ranging in price from about $30 to $100.

Finally, Hang Ma street has been bustling for nearly two weeks. Christmas decorations are hanging from every possibility, and Christmas trees, wreathes, and lights seem to be toppling out into the street. Over the next couple of days this place will be alive with last minute Christmas shoppers and photographers trying to catch all the action.

At Hang Ma, one could also get all the lights and decorations to turn their hotel room into Santa’s workshop for under $20. Maybe this year a few will be inspired to Flash Mob a local park in Hanoi with some Christmas spirit.

Below are some pictures to take you on a little journey through Christmas in Hanoi!
