Fines introduced for energy abuse

In Vietnam, a local responsible tour operator has begun efforts to reduce its power usage. Among, its green office programs (recycling, greening balcony, water conservation, and reduced elevator usage), the Footprint Vietnam Travel team has begun delivering fines to its staff for ‘power abuse’. For example, if a staff member forgets to turn off a computer or unplug something a fine of 50,000 VND (and some playful razzing) is enforced.

The idea was thought up by long-time employee at Footprint and Vietnam tour travel consultant Tra. In the summer, when the company moved to a new location, Tra volunteered to champion a green office program. Already, Footprint has seen energy consumption drop 35% in the new, larger office. Tra’s goal is to see that number further reduced to 45% within the coming months.

As for the piggy-bank that holds the fines, Tra has said that as of now there really isn’t that much money in there as of yet, and that maybe she will have to stiffen the green-office regulations. Tra’s green office program has also created to be fun as well as educational. The money raised from fines will be used to pay for a celebratory luncheon.
